Box Score 2 TROY, N.Y. - The Skidmore College baseball team entered Saturday's road doubleheader with RPI needing two wins to keep its postseason hopes alive, but it was not to be, as the Thoroughbreds would overcome a four-run deficit in the opening game en route to an 9-7 win in extra innings before RPI did the same in the second game to secure the 7-6 win.
Skidmore opened up an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, as
Marco Baratta doubled home
Geoff Green who led off the game with a walk and worked his way around the bases. Baratta would come around to score Skidmore's second run on a single by
Alex Barber before RPI would get out of the inning.
The home team answered in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own including two unearned runs after a Skidmore error allowed Shane Matthews and Johnny Rio to cross home plate, making it 3-2.
The Thoroughbreds tied the game in the third inning after a single by Baratta was mishandled by RPI's outfield, allowing
Leejay Pollacchi to advance home.
Both teams exchanged zeros until the Engineers put up four runs in the fifth inning on four hits including a triple by Matthews that plated two en route to a 7-3 lead.
Skidmore would not be denied, however, as it battled back to tie the game at 7-7. Barber reached on an error and was quickly moved to third base after
Mike Pannozzi lifted a deep double to right field. Pannozzi would replace Barber on third base as
Nick Barra lined a sharp single down the line, scoring Barber in the process. The next batter,
Jeff Spindel laced an RBI single that advanced Barra around the infield to third before
Matty Tatkow lofted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Barra for Skidmore's sixth run of the game. The Thoroughbreds tied the game when Pollacchi singled through the hole, allowing Spindel to score on the play.
After the seventh inning, the score remained tied and the game would head into extra innings to decide a winner.
After a scoreless eighth inning, the Thoroughbreds claimed the momentum in the ninth. Baratta led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second after
Erik Watkins moved him over with a sacrifice bunt. Barber stepped up to the plate and connected for a single that was misplayed by the Engineer second baseman, allowing Baratta to score the go-ahead run. Skidmore added an insurance run when Barber would eventually score on a wild pitch to give the Thoroughbreds a 9-7 lead which would hold.
Andrew Bannon earned the win after tossing 4.1 innings of relief of
Nick Petrella. Tim Gallagher is credited with the loss.
Baratta was 3-4 with a double, an RBI, one walk and two runs including the go-ahead run in the ninth. Barber was 2-5 with an RBI and two runs scored while Pannozzi was 2-3 with a double and one run scored.
In the second game, Skidmore scored two runs in the first inning before tacking on a run in the second and fifth innings. Skidmore would add two more in the seventh after a Watkins double plated Pollacchi and Green.
Down 6-2, RPI would engineer a five-run seventh inning comeback that effectively closed out the 2013 season for Skidmore. The home team came up with three big hits in the final frame including a bases loaded walk and hit batter to secure the walk-off win.
Dan Brown takes the loss after allowing three runs on two hits in relief of
Isaac Forman who had tossed six plus innings and allowed four runs.
The Thoroughbreds finish with a record of 16-22 including a 10-16 record in conference play.
