Box Score 2 SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.-- The bats fell silent for the Skidmore College baseball team in a two 4-1 Liberty League losses to the Rochester Institute of Technology, Tuesday at Castle Diamond.
The Thoroughbreds fall to 6-12 overall and 3-7 in league play, while the Tigers up their record to 9-6 and 4-4.
In the first game, RIT scored three unearned runs in the 4-1 win. The Tigers went in front in the third, 1-0, when Jaren Bell was hit and eventually scored on an infield ground out. RIT made it 2-0 in the third when Tyler Ramotar reached on an error, stole second then scored on an RBI single by Bell.
Skidmore cut it to 2-1 in the sixth when
Geoff Green drew a two-out walk, stole second and then scored on an RBI single from
Erik Watkins.
RIT then scored two unearned insurance runs with two outs in the seventh on a Taylor Hogan single.
For the Thoroughbreds,
Isaac Forman (0-1) took the loss, despite a decent outing. In 6 2/3, he allowed four runs on nine hits, with two walks and a strike out.
For the Tigers, Brandon Cohall (1-0) got the win in his first collegiate appearance. He went six innings, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and a strikeout. Seth Noreman pitched the seventh for his second save of the season. Brian Brazee was 2-3 and Tyler Ramotar was 1-3 with two runs.
The second game, scheduled for seven, went 11 innings. Both teams scored in the first inning and then put zeros on the board until RIT scored three in the 11th for the 4-1 win.
In the first Ronnie Canestro doubled for the Tigers and then scored on an RBI single by Brazee. Skidmore responded in the bottom of the inning, when
Leejay Pollacchi opened the inning with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a
Geoff Green bunt, and then scored on a Watkins single.
Both teams had chances the rest of the way, with Skidmore stranding runners in the ninth and 10th innings.
In the 11th, RIT broke the tie when Brett Kajganich hit an RBI double that just caught the right field line. Walt Roman then plated Kajganich with an RBI single and eventually scored on an RBI single by Ramotar for the 4-1 final.
Dan Brown had solid start for the Thoroughbreds. He went 6 1/3, giving up one run on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Nick Masterson took the loss, despite being tough in relief, retiring the first nine batters he faced before an error to open the 11th. Green finished 2-3 and
Matty Tatkow went 2-5.
RIT used five pitchers to get through the game, with Brian Sheridan getting the win in relief with a pair of scoreless innings to finish the game. At the plate, Brazee was 2-3 with an RBI and Roman was 2-4 with a run and an RBI.
Skidmore travels to the University of Rochester for a four-game series April 13-14.
