Baseball picks up non-conference win

Box Score MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Dan Brown tossed a complete-game and the Thoroughbred offense collected 15 hits as the Skidmore baseball team picked up an 8-3 non-conference win, Tuesday afternoon against Middlebury College.

With the win, Skidmore improves to 14-20, while Middlebury falls to 9-17.

Brown earns his first win of the season after holding the Panthers to three runs (two earned) on eight hits over nine innings of action.

Both offenses were held in check until the top of the fourth inning when Mike Pannozzi drilled a two-run homerun to take a quick 2-0 lead.  The next batter, Andrew Bannon reached first base after being hit by a pitched ball and advanced to second as Skidmore gave up an out to move him into scoring position.  Geoff Green plated the Thoroughbreds third run as he singled through the right side of the infield to make it 3-0.  Jeff Spindel capped the four-run inning when he rocketed a double that scored Green all the way from first.

Middlebury countered in the bottom of the fourth, producing three runs to cut the Skidmore advantage to a single run at 4-3.
In the fifth, Pannozzi added an insurance run as his single scored Jeb Clarke who had doubled earlier in the inning.

The Thoroughbreds were at it again in the sixth as back-to-back hits by Dan Johnstone, and Green had the Thoroughbreds set up for a potential big innings.  Spindel lifted a sacrifice fly to leftfield which allowed Johnstone to tag-up and cross home plate, but that was all Skidmore would get as the Panther defense recorded the final two outs of the inning to avoid further trouble.

Brown got stronger as the game wore on, holding the Panthers scoreless as the Thoroughbreds cruised to the 8-3 final.

Green was 3-5 with a walk, an RBI and one run scored, while Spindel was 3-5 with a double and a pair of runs batted in.  Pannozzi had a strong game, going 2-2 with a homerun, four RBI, two walks and a run scored. Clarke was 2-4 with two doubles and two runs scored.

Skidmore will close out its home schedule with a critical doubleheader against RPI Friday, May 3 beginning at 1 p.m.
