Box Score 2 SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Skidmore softball team, now 11-27, closed out its regular season splitting a doubleheader with Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Thursday afternoon at Wagner Park.
The Trailblazers got off to a quick start in game one, connecting with three first-inning singles including an RBI knock by Angelica Perfido that plated Michaela DiNicola to give the visitors the 1-0 lead.
MCLA struck again in the third inning after two Thoroughbred errors allowed the first two batters to reach. A groundout allowed a Trailblazer run to cross the plate before Perfido knocked in her second run of the afternoon, singling through the hole to plate Kendra Hobbs. MCLA would load the bases, but Skidmore pitcher,
Cassie Fishkin settled down, striking out consecutive batters to hold the deficit at three runs.
The Thoroughbreds roared back in the home half of the fourth inning, scoring six runs on five hits to take a 6-3 lead. Fishkin helped her own cause, plating Skidmore's first run.
Mackenzie Whiting singled and advanced to second base after a Trailblazer error on the return throw.
Donata Lorenzo stepped into the batter's box and laced a double to the outfield fence that scored Fishkin and Whiting to tie the game at three runs apiece. Another Trailblazer error allowed Skidmore to plate another run before
Abby Shea and
Carol Brown each singled; plating two more runs to cap the Thoroughbred comeback.
MCLA countered with a rally of its own in the seventh inning, plating four runs on six hits to escape with a 7-6 win.
Katie Sorochka takes the loss after giving up four runs in three innings of relief. Shea went 3-3 with a run scored, while Whiting was 2-4 with a double, an RBI and one run scored.
MCLA was led by DiNicola's two hits in three tries with three runs. Perfido had two hits in four at-bats resulting in two RBI.
In the nightcap, Whiting put the Thoroughbreds ahead in the first inning with a two-out RBI blast that scored
Julia Schwartz making it 1-0.
Both pitchers were dealing as neither team was able to score a run until Skidmore broke the drought in the fifth, scoring three runs on four hits including three consecutive RBI singles by Schwartz, Whiting and Fishkin.
Sorochka would retire the side in order in the seventh inning as Skidmore shut out the Trailblazers, 4-0
Whiting had a strong game at the plate, going 2-3 with a pair of RBI, while Shea was 1-2 with a walk and a run scored.
Sorochka improved to 10-14 after tossing seven shutout innings and scattering six hits. The junior pitcher struck out 11 batters in the win.
