Baseball falls to SUNY Plattsburgh

Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Skidmore College baseball team couldn't hold onto an early lead as it dropped a non-conference game to SUNY Plattsburgh, Tuesday afternoon 8-4.

Skidmore, now 11-17 on the season took a 1-0 first inning lead after Leejay Pollacchi singled home Chris Lorenz who had walked earlier in the inning.  Plattsburgh starting pitcher Brian Burns stranded Pollacchi at second after inducing the next two Thoroughbreds into outs.

The Cardinals snatched the lead away from Skidmore in the home half of the second inning, scoring two runs despite only having one hit in the inning.

Plattsburgh worked into and out of trouble in the third as the Thoroughbreds connected with back-to-back singles to start the inning before Burns retired the next three batters to escape the threat.

The home team plated three more runs in the third, making it 5-1 after drilling four hits in the inning.

Down 7-2 after a pair of late Plattsburgh runs, Skidmore looked to rally, as it had runners on first and second and only one out.  Marco Baratta smacked a single up the middle, allowing Jeb Clarke to score.  Lorenz and Baratta made a heads up play as each took an extra base after the center fielder misplayed the ball to move two more runners into scoring position.
The next batter, Pollacchi lined a single through the middle of the field, plating both runners in the process to bring the Thoroughbreds to within three runs, but that was as close as it would get as the Cardinals added another run in the eighth to close the door on a Skidmore comeback.

Andrew Bannon takes the loss, lasting only three innings and allowing five runs (three earned).  Burns moves to 5-2 on the year after giving up one run over five innings with Steven Corea earning the save.

Lorenz swung a hot bat, going 3-4 with a walk and two runs scored, while Pollacchi was 2-5 with three RBI.  Baratta, Jake Dougherty and Nick Barra each had two hits in the loss.

Skidmore will host Castleton State, Thursday at 4 p.m. at Castle Diamond.
