Skidmore women's lacrosse narrowly loses conference opener

Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Skidmore women's lacrosse team kept it close in its Liberty League debut against Clarkson, Friday afternoon before a late scoring run allowed the Golden Knights escaped with a 16-12 win.

The Thoroughbreds are now 0-1 in Liberty League play and 1-5 overall, while Clarkson stands at 1-0 in the conference and 6-0 overall.

The Thoroughbreds saw six different players record a point and were led by Robin Fetterolf's six goals on nine shots.  Lexi Melville tallied three goals, one assist and three groundballs, while Spencer Morgan had two goals, one assist and three draw controls.  Emma Harris recorded one goal on the afternoon and Anna Gubbins and Maggie Murphy each had one assist.

Alyssa Cristadli paced Clarkson with eight points including seven goals and one assist.  Christine Wright had four goals and three assists, while Katie VanDeValk netted a pair of goals in the win.

Shelby Witheford played well in goal for Skidmore, stopping eight shots.  Kara DiNatale had 10 stops and earned the win for Clarkson.

Clarkson got off to a quick start, netting two goals within the game's first three minutes of action.  Skidmore rallied back with a 2-0 scoring run of its own when Gubbins scooped up a groundball and dished it off to Morgan, who found an open Fetterolf who scored Skidmore's first goal of the contest.  Skidmore won the ensuing draw control and scored its second goal a mere sixteen seconds later when Murphy found the stick of Morgan who beat Clarkson's goalie, tying the game at 2-2.

Both offenses were neck-and-neck, as each exchanged several goals over the game's next ten minutes until a Harris goal at 12:31 gave Skidmore a 5-4 advantage.

The lead would be short lived, as Clarkson rattled off four unanswered goals to take an 8-5 lead with just over seven minutes remaining in the opening half.

Fetterolf ended the Thoroughbred scoring drought when she netted her second goal of the afternoon on a free position play at 6:37.

When the dust settled and the first half came to an end, Clarkson clung to a 9-7 lead.

Skidmore controlled the tempo in the opening minutes of the second half, forcing a Clarkson turnover, which led to another Fetterolf goal, cutting the deficit to a single goal.

A modest 2-0 run gave the Knights some breathing room, but Skidmore continued to chip away.  Melville scored the Thoroughbred's ninth goal on a free position attempt, making it 11-9 in favor of the home team.

Clarkson countered with a goal of its own at 18:18, but the Thoroughbreds capitalized on the draw control and scored 20 seconds later when Fetterolf's shot beat Clarkson goalie DiNatale, making the score 12-10 in favor of the Knights.

The two goal deficit was as close as Skidmore would get, as the Knights scored four of the game's next six goals to escape with a 16-12 victory.

Skidmore will face Liberty League foe St. Lawrence, Saturday March 30 at 3 p.m. in Canton, N.Y.
