Skidmore falls to Denison 18-7

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team began its spring-break schedule with a loss to Denison University 18-7 March 12 in Orlando, Fla.

The Thoroughbreds move to 0-3 this season, while Denison remains unbeaten at 3-0.

Lexi Melville posted five goals on 10 shots for the Thoroughbreds.  Brittney Dioneda scored two goals, while Robin Fetterolf added an assist to go along with five draw controls and a ground ball. 

Molly Chapman led Denison with six goals on six shots.  Whitney Powel had five points on four goals and one assist, while Erin Keller tallied three points (one goals, two assist).

Denison scored the game's first goal at 28:51 when Molly Chapman found the back of the net.  Less than four minutes later, Denison would net its second goal when Lauren Adams found Carol Allen to give the Big Red a 2-0 advantage.

The Thoroughbreds scored their first goal of the half at 21:53 when Melville took advantage of the free position to cut the Denison lead in half.

Denison would rip off four straight goals over the course of the next nine minutes to extend its lead to 6-1.  Melville stop the bleeding for Skidmore at 8:04 when she converted on her second free position goal, bringing Skidmore within four goals. 

Up four, Denison went on a 5-0 run that lasted nearly eight minutes of action stretching from 4:47 remaining in the first half to the 27:33 mark of the second.

The Thoroughbreds tried to mount an offensive when Melville scored her third free position of the contest, but the lead was too much to overcome as Denison continued to score quickly.

Shelby Witheford takes the loss for Skidmore, while Denison's Grace Bondemann earns the victory.

Denison tallied 18 goals on only 27 shots, while Skidmore managed seven goals on 24 shots.  Skidmore  won twice as many draw controls as the Big Red (20-10), while also having seven free position opportunities to Denison's four.

Skidmore will continue its spring-break schedule when it faces Wheaton College March 15 at 10 am in Orlando, Fla.
