Box Score Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- St. Lawrence University led by as many as 17 points in the second half, before holding on for a 67-61 Liberty League men's basketball win over Skidmore College, Tuesday night at the Williamson Sports Center.
The loss drops the Thoroughbreds to 8-5 in the Liberty League and 15-6 overall. The Saints are 7-5 and 9-12.
Aldin Medunjanin led four Skidmore players in double figures with 14 points before fouling out. He also had thee assists.
Sakhile Sithole scored 12 points and had six rebounds, while
Tanner Brooks and
Kevin Dahill had 11 each.
Brady Conlin led the Saints with 24 points. Kyle Miller added 19, hitting four three pointers.
St. Lawrence made the most of 14 trips to the free throw line in the first half, hitting all but one, to lead by 17 with 33-16 with 3:58 to play. Skidmore had an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 11 at the break, 35-24. Three-pointers by Dahill and Medunjanin accounted for six of the eight points, while Sithole scored as time ran out.
The Saints matched their biggest lead of 17, 45-28 with 16:20 to play. The Thoroughbreds chipped away, using a 21-6 run to get to within two, 51-49 with 8:18 to play.
That was as close as Skidmore would get with the Saints hitting 9-of-10 free throws over the final eight minutes to preserve the win.
For the game, St. Lawrence was 25-29 from the line for 86.2%. The teams were whistled for a combined 46 fouls.
"Hard to comeback from that far against a well coached team," said Skidmore coach
Joe Burke. "We didn't have the level of focus or execution necessary in the 1st half and as a result we were forced to play catchup. Credit St Lawrence tonight, we have to make some adjustments and find the best combination of players to help us win games going forward."
Skidmore is off until a Feb. 12 game at Clarkson.
