SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Skidmore College woman's lacrosse team kicks off its season March 3 at 12 p.m. when it visits Mount Holyoke College in a non-conference matchup.
Despite losing three of its top scorers and an all-conference defender, the Thoroughbreds will feature a potent offensive anchored by
Lexi Melville, whose 34 points (29 goals, 5 assists) led Skidmore last season. Midfielder
Spencer Morgan looks to build on her successful rookie year when she contributed 16 points (7-9).
Robin Fetterolf also returns for her junior season after posting 24 points (19-5) last season.
"Robin is certainly our glue at midfield," expressed Coach
Elizabeth Ghilardi, now in her third season at the helm. Ghilardi went on to say that although young, this year's roster is one of the most talented groups she has coached and expects nothing less than a return to the Liberty league playoffs.
In 2012 the Thoroughbreds fell one game short of reaching the post season compiling a 9-7 overall record including four conference wins.
This season won't be without its challenges, as Ghilardi was quick to point out that her team plays a majority of its games on the road, which may prove difficult for a younger team. "The Liberty League is one of the most competitive conferences in the lacrosse landscape," noted Ghilardi.
The Thoroughbreds will also play a tough non-conference schedule, featuring nationally ranked Amherst (5th) and Hamilton College (18th) and regionally ranked Denison College (5th).
The addition of Erin Rigby as assistant coach has already provided the Thoroughbreds with an added spark.
Rigby authored 190 points in her collegiate career and her work with Skidmore's offensive will pay dividends as the season wears on.
Ghilardi is excited for the season to get underway. She expects several younger players to have significant roles in the team's success.
Paige DiAntonio is expected to have a break-out season and become one of the defensive leaders of the team, while
Shelby Witheford will take over the goaltending responsibilities from
Rachel Klein who graduated.
Skidmore returns home to face Utica College on Wednesday, Mar. 6 at 4 p.m. at Wachenheim Field. The team then flies to Orlando for a Mar. 12 game against Denison followed by Wheaton College on Mar. 15.
