SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Skidmore College men's basketball team is ready to begin the road to a third straight Liberty League title on Wednesday at Hobart College.
The fourth-seed Thoroughbreds will meet top-seed Hobart in a semifinal on Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. The game is a rematch of last year's championship game, won by the Thoroughbreds. Skidmore has played the Statesmen twice this season, losing both matchups, including an overtime thriller 67-66. The Thoroughbreds have had success playing on Hobart's home court, winning both of their Liberty League titles at Bristol Gym.
Although young, Skidmore boasts several key players including a pair of outstanding freshman in
Aldin Medunjanin and
Tanner Brooks who have been named Liberty League Rookie of the Week nine combined times. Medunjanin leads Skidmore in numerous categories including points per game (14.8) rebounds (5.8) and assists (4.8). Brooks ranks second in scoring at 13.8 points per game. Sophomore Conner Merrill has developed into a major component of coach
Joe Burke's game plan, averaging 13.6 points per game, while leading the Liberty League in blocked shots with 69.
Hobart's offense relies heavily on its starters, who account for nearly 80 percent of total scoring. The Statesmen are paced by league scoring leader Richie Bonney (19.8 points). Bonney is also on of the league's top rebounders (8.4). Senior Stefan Thompson enters Wednesday's game averaging 15.8 points and 5.3 assists.
Skidmore will need to limit Hobart's second chance opportunities by controlling the glass and winning the battle in the paint. In its previous two games against Hobart, Skidmore outscored the Statesmen 54-44 inside, despite being outrebounded 82-65.
The winner will move on to the championship round where it will face the winner of Union versus RPI on Feb. 23.
