Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY --
Brock Bakewell netted two second-half goals to push the Skidmore College men's soccer team past Clarkson, 2-1, Friday at Wachenheim Field.
The Thoroughbreds improve to 8-4-2 (2-1-1 Liberty), while the Golden Knights fall to 2-9 (0-4 Liberty).
Skidmore started the game on the offensive, but early efforts from Bakewell and
Adam Beek sailed wide of the target. Trevor Blackwell put Clarkson in front in the 20th minute, controlling a Skidmore clearance with his chest and smashing a volley from 18 yards inside the right post.
The Thoroughbreds threatened the Clarkson goal early in the second half, but Golden Knights goalkeeper Michael King made a reaction save to deny Bakewell's close-range effort after a scramble in front of goal, preserving the one-goal lead.
However, Bakewell would not be denied, capitalizing on his next opportunity in the 64th minute. Bakewell converted on a cross from
Andrew Blake, slotting home a shot from eight yards.
Beek nearly put the Thoroughbreds ahead in the 70th minute, but his curling strike rang off the far post. He came close four minutes later as
Andy Ringler slipped a ball behind the Clarkson defense, but King was quick off his line, closing down the angle and turning away Beek's attempt at goal.
Skidmore gained momentum in the 77th minute after a red card put Clarkson down to 10 men.
Bakewell tallied the game-winner in the 82nd minute, tucking a strike in off the left post on a feed from Andrew Pertsov. Pertsov broke down the left wing and beat two defenders along the end line before threading a pass to Bakewell for the finish.
The Thoroughbreds outshot the Golden Knights 33-6 and owned 9-5 advantage in corners.
Eli Kisselbach made two saves in goal for Skidmore, while King stopped 10 shots in goal for Clarkson.
