Thoroughbreds short at St. Lawrence

Box Score Canton, N.Y.— St. Lawrence University shot 50 percent from three-point range on the way to a 76-74 Liberty League win over Skidmore College, Tuesday night.

The Thoroughbreds fall to 7-5 overall and 1-2 Liberty League, while the Saints are 3-7 and 1-0.

Connor Merrill led Skidmore with 17 points. Sakhile Sithole scored 13 points off the bench, while Tanner Brooks chipped in 11 points, four assists, and five steals.

Kyle Miller led SLU with a game-high 18 points and Brady Condlin added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

St. Lawrence shot 54% (13-24) in the second half from the floor, including 57% from three-point land.  The Saints

Though Skidmore took a 5-0 lead in the early minutes, the Saints used outstanding perimeter shooting and to build a lead throughout the first half.  Matt McTague gave the Saints a 13-12 lead with 10:53 to play on a three-pointer which kick-started a 13-0 run in under 3:00 minutes for a 23-12 cushion.  Skidmore would get within six, 32-26, at halftime thanks to buckets from Sithole and Kevin Dahill.

The Thoroughbreds would carry some momentum into the second half, scoring the first five points again to make it a one-point game, 32-31, on a three-pointer by Brooks.  Miller responded with an ensuing triple to keep the lead intact.

St. Lawrence led the entire second half, but a Brooks' lay-up with 6:54 to go kept the Thoroughbreds within striking distance at 61-57, but Miller again answered with a three to push the advantage back to seven.

Down six with 2:24 minutes remaining, Skidmore couldn't get a stop on the defensive end, as Brase tipped the ball in off a miss to extend the cushion to 69-61 on the way to the 76-64 win.

"You have to credit St. Lawrence," said Skidmore coach Joe Burke. "I thought they played a great basketball game.  We tried to match their intensity for a long stretch but in the end their size just wore us out.

"At this point we have to keep getting better.  I feel like were not where we need to be defensively but that can change. We also need to know that as the two-time defending champs we are going to continue to get everyone's best game regardless of how young we are."

The Thoroughbreds are at Union College on Friday.
