Strong second half propels Skidmore past Mount Holyoke

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – Leslie Stebbins scored four goals including the game-winner with 2:05 remaining as the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team rallied to a 9-8 win over Mount Holyoke in Tuesday night's non-league matchup at Wachenheim Field.

The Thoroughbreds improve to 6-2, while the Lyons fall to 5-4.

Molly Macdonald opened the scoring on a free position shot 1:53 into the game to give Mount Holyoke the early lead.  Skidmore answered back as Spencer Morgan found Stebbins to tie it up, but The Lyons went on a 3-0 run to push the lead to 4-1 behind goals from Liza Randolph, Brianne Phelan and Naomi Miller.

The Thoroughbreds were able to cut the lead down to one twice in the final seven minutes of the half behind goals from Lexi Melville but the Lyons continued to answer back and held a 6-4 lead at the break.

Stebbins cut the lead back down to one 50 seconds into the second half and broke a scoreless drought of nearly 17 minutes to tie it up at 6-6 and freshman Laura Ferzoco gave Skidmore its first lead of the game on her second goal of the game just a few minutes later.

Mount Holyoke responded with back-to-back goals from Randolph and Phelan to take an 8-7 lead, but Melville's third goal of the game with 8:21 remaining tied it for the final time before Stebbins netted the game-winner.

The Thoroughbreds held off a late charge as goalie Rachel Klein made a huge save with 27 seconds remaining to preserve the win.
