Troy, N.Y. – It was all offense Sunday, with RPI getting the best of Skidmore, 11-7 and 13-11 in a Liberty League baseball doubleheader.
The Thoroughbreds remain in a three-way battle with RPI and St. Lawrence for first in the league with a four-game set let next weekend with Union.
Skidmore is 24-12 overall and 15-9 in league play. The Engineers are 19-17 and 16-8.
In the first game, RPI took a 6-1 lead bvefore
Zack Rudman (Pittsfield, NY/Pittsfield-Mendon) and
Matty Tatkow (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) each had run-scoring base-hits in the third to pull to within 6-3, but the Engineers answered with a single run in their half of the stanza.
The visitors drew even at 7-7 with a four-run fifth, which was highlighted by game-tying single from junior
Leejay Pollacchi (Porter Corners, NY/Saratoga Springs). A sac-fly in the bottom of the fifth gave the hosts the lead for good and a three-run sixth solidified the victory for Rensselaer.
In the second game, Skidmore scored seven in the top of the first with RPI responding with five in the bottom of the inning. The Thoroughbreds tacked on two in the seventh and two in the ninth to lead 11-5 before the Engineers scored five in the bottom of the ninth, tying it with a Chuck Erickson grand slam. RPI won it in the 10th with a two-run homer by Tanner Boucher.
Nick Barra was 3-5 with 3 RBI and
Erik Watkins was 3-5 with two runs and an RBI.
