Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- Rensselaer held off a late Skidmore rally on the way to an 11-9 Liberty League win, Saturday at Wachenheim Field.
The 14-1 Engineers win the Liberty League regular season title with an 8-1 league mark. The 14 wins is also a program record, breaking the old total of 13 set in 1997. Skidmore finishes the season 9-7 and 4-5.
RPI took a 5-2 first half lead behind a pair of goals from Shannon Maguire. Skidmore fought back to within one, 5-4, on goals by
Robin Fetterolf at 9:35 and
Lauren Madden at 7:22. The teams traded goals to end the half, with the Engineers in front 6-5 at the break.
The Engineers scored five of the first six goals of the second half, including two more by Maguire, to open an 11-6 lead.
Skidmore didn't quit three goals in the final 4:07 for the 11-9 final. Fetterolf scored at 4:07 from
Summer Segalas. Segalas then scored twice in the last minute.
Segalas finished with three goals and an assist. Madden had two goals, giving her 151 for her career. She added four draw controls and a caused turnover.
Maguire led all scores with four goals. Meg Colitz and Rachel Scofield had two goals each. Schofield also had four draw controls.
RPI had a 26-22 edge in shots. Engineer goalie Allie Arnal had five saves, while Skidmore goalie
Rachel Klein had nine saves.
