Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College baseball team completed the four-game series sweep of St. Lawrence with 4-0 and 9-3 Liberty League wins Saturday afternoon at David Alexander Castle Diamond.
The wins catapult the Thoroughbreds past the Saints and into first place in the Liberty League with a 14-6 league and 23-8 overall record. SLU drops to third place with a 12-7 league and 19-10 mark.
Skidmore junior
Max Martins allowed just six hits to earn the shutout victory in the opener as a four-run fifth inning provided all the offense for the Thoroughbreds.
St. Lawrence's best scoring opportunity came in the fourth, opening with a pair of singles from Khifer O'Connor and Jeff Kott, who were then sacrificed over to second and third with just one out. But Martins was able to get out of the jam, retiring the next two batters on a foul pop and an outfield fly.
The Thoroughbreds broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth as
Alex Barber and
Matty Tatkow opened the inning with back-to-back walks and after a sacrifice moved them up a base,
Casey Quinn singled home Barber and Tatkow was able to score on an error. With two outs in the inning, the Thoroughbreds had three straight singles including RBI hits from
Leejay Pollacchi and
Zack Rudman to push the lead to 4-0.
Martins finished with five strikeouts to improve to 3-0 on the year. Joe Riley took the loss to fall to 3-2. He allowed four runs on eight hits, while striking out five in the complete game effort.
In the second game, Skidmore got another strong performance on the mound, this time from senior
Jordan Keysor. The crafty lefty mowed through the SLU line-up, only allowing a run after a 30 minute rain delay in the eighth. In seven innings (two batters in the eighth) he allowed one run on six singles, with no walks, and four strikeouts.
Skidmore led 8-0 before the Saints got on the board with one in the eighth. The Thoroughbreds scored once in the ninth, while the SLU tallied two in the bottom of the ninth for the 9-3 final.
Skidmore's
Geoff Green was 4-6 with an RBI double and a two-run single.
Alex Barber was 2-4 with an RBI double and two RBI single.
Casey Quinn and
Leejay Pollacchi also had two hits each for the Thoroughbreds.
Paul Piatelli and Matt D'Auteuil had two singles each for the Saints. Andrew Schreyack (3-2) took the loss, allowing six runs on 12 hits in six innings of work.
