Plattsburgh, N.Y. - The Skidmore College men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, defeating St. Joseph's College 2-0 on the final day of the Cardinal Classic at the Field House Complex.
The Thoroughbreds earn their first win of the season and move to 1-1 while the Golden Eagles drop to 0-2.
St. Joseph's threatened early when Mike Anglim picked up a lob pass and raced in uncontested against Skidmore goalkeeper
Nick Peterson. Peterson smothered Anglim's shot and the Thoroughbred defense cleared out the ball from the penalty area. Anglim's fourth minute attack would be the Golden Eagles' only shot on net for the remainder of the game.
Two minutes after the stifled breakaway,
Marcus Goldbas sent a free kick into the penalty area that was headed in by
Brock Bakewell. Skidmore built on the early strike with another goal in the 16th minute by
Aaron Krepack. Goldbas fired a pass across the penalty area that Krepack headed into the net.
Skidmore controlled the ball for much of the game, only no shots on net over the final 74 minutes. The Thoroughbreds' defense was able to win races to the ball and take possession on corner and free kicks.
Peterson recorded a shutout by stopping one shot while Chris Muhns suffered the loss by allowing two goals on nine shots.
