Baseball closes regular season with split against RPI

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. - The Skidmore College baseball team wrapped up its regular season with a doubleheader split with RPI, Sunday afternoon at Castle Diamond.

Skidmore took the opener, 14-1 and the Engineers came back to take the nightcap, 12-1.

The Thoroughbreds are now 26-11 overall and 12-10 in league play, while RPI improves to 23-11 overall and 16-6.

In the first game, Skidmore sent 11 players to the plate in a five-run second and then scored six runs on two hits in the third on the way to the 14-1 win. The team scored its first 11 runs without an extra base hit.   While the Thoroughbreds were hot on offense, pitcher Zack Rudman didn't allow a hit until one out in the fifth on the way to his fifth win of the season. Rudman (5-1) allowed an unearned run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts in six innings. He benefited from three double plays.

Skidmore senior Zach Brown hit his first collegiate home run on senior day, a solo shot to left field in the fourth inning. Brown finished 1-2 with two RBI and three runs. Matty Tatkow, Rob Rubenstein, Erik Watkins and Jeremy Selecky had two hits each for the Thoroughbreds. Brian Lowry had two RBI with a sacrifice fly and bases loaded walk.

Levi Washburn (2-1) took the loss, going the first 1.1. Kyle Kopacz had an RBI single in the fifth for the lone RPI run.

In game two, Mike Campisi (4-3) tossed a complete game, allowing six hits and one run, while striking out five and the Engineers used a five-run third inning to build up a 6-0 lead on their way to a 12-1 win.

They added three more runs in the fourth on a three-run homerun from Tanner Boucher, who finished with two hits and four RBI. Kyle LaVigne went 2-4 with four runs scored and Cody Vincent scored three runs.

Brown finished 2-3 with two doubles and a run scored and Lowry also went 2-4 with an RBI. Bobby Stafutti (3-2) took the loss, tossing the first 2.1 innings.

Both teams return to action this weekend at the Liberty League Tournament, hosted by RPI.
