Game One
Game Two
Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College baseball team picked up a split behind
Nick Laracuente's one-hitter in game two of Sunday's Liberty League matchup against Vassar at Castle Diamond. The Brewers took game one, 8-3 and the Thoroughbreds won the nightcap, 6-1.
Skidmore is now 10-5 overall and 2-4 in the league, while the Brewers are 8-7 and 4-4.
In the first game, Vassar pitcher John MacGregor earned his first win of the season, holding the Thoroughbreds to three runs (one earned) on six hits, three walks, and eight strikeouts. MacGregor tossed 122 pitchers, but didn't allow a runner past second base after the third inning.
Skidmore took a 1-0 lead in the first when
Leejay Pollacchi singled, stole second and eventually scored on a
Zack Rudman infield ground out.
The Brewers sent 10 batters to the plate in a 5-run third. Vassar scratched out five runs on four hits, two walks and a hit batter. Skidmore came back with two unearned runs in the bottom of the third to cut it to 5-3, but that was as close as it would get. The Brewers scored three in the top of the seventh on six walks for the 8-3 final.
Rudman finished with two RBI.
Zach Brown had a double and Eric Watkins was 1-3 with an RBI single. Joe Bubar was 2-3 with an RBI for Vassar.
In game two, Laracuente was dominant, tossing a complete game one-hitter to improve to 4-0 on the year. He struck out nine and walked just one, while allowing an unearned run in the first inning and allowing just two baserunners in the final eight innings.
The Brewers struck first, taking a 1-0 lead on Brett Zaziski's RBI single in the top of the first.
The Thoroughbreds added four more runs in the seventh. Selecky and Tatkow opened the inning with back-to-back singles before Pollacchi reached on an error that plated Selecky. Rubenstein then drove in two more with a single up the middle and eventually scored on a double play.
Laracuente silenced the Vassar bats, retiring the final 11 batters to secure a 6-1 victory.
Rubenstein had two hits and four RBI, while Tatkow and Selecky each had two hits and two runs.
Lawrence Flicker (1-1) took the loss for the Brewers, allowing six runs (four earned) in six-plus innings.
