Game One
Game Two
Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team earned a split in Thursday's non-league doubleheader against MCLA as the Thoroughbreds took game one 4-2 and the Trailblazers picked up the win in the nightcap, 10-8.
Both teams are now 10-10 on the season.
In the opener, senior
Charlotte Evans (Richland, Mich.) blasted a game-winning grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to give Skidmore a 4-2 victory.
MCLA struck first in game one, getting on the board in the second inning as Kendra Hobbs doubled home Kate Ouellette to make it 1-0. The Trailblazers added another run in the sixth when Kristin Robillard scored on a throwing error to give them a 2-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Carol Brown (Seattle, Wash.) and
Katie Peverada (Hampden, Maine) had back-to-back singles to load the bases for Evans, who unloaded them with a deep shot to left center for her third homerun of the season, giving the Thoroughbreds the lead and eventual 4-2 victory.
Sam Crose (Asonett, Mass.) picked up the win for Skidmore, tossing a complete game allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits, while striking out six and walking none. Brown and Peverada each went 3-for-4, while Evans went 2-for-4 with the grand slam.
Hadley Ameen took the loss for MCLA, allowing four runs on 11 hits in six innings.
Game two saw the Mountaineers score six runs with two outs in the top of the seventh to erase a four run deficit and earn a 10-8 victory.
MCLA opened the scoring again, this time with a solo shot to left from Kayla Koumjian in the third.
The Thoroughbreds tied it at 1-1 in the fourth on an RBI single from
Katie Sorochka (Jackson, N.J.) and then took advantage of three Mountaineer errors to add four more runs and take a 5-1 lead.
The Trailblazers made it 5-3 when they tacked on two runs in the fifth behind an RBI single from Hobbs and an error, but Skidmore got the runs right back in the bottom half on Sorchka's solo blast to left, her second home run of the season, and a sacrifice fly from
Christina Hein (Burke, Va.).
The teams traded runs in the sixth as well with MCLA picking up a run on an RBI single from Jaclyn Candelet and the Thoroughbreds answered right back with a solo home run to left from
Julia Schwartz to make it 8-4.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, the Trailblazers were able to take advantage of four hits and four Skidmore errors to put up six runs and take a 10-8 lead, which they would hold onto for the victory and the split.
Ainsely MacDonald earned the win for MCLA, allowing just one run on three hits in 2.2 innings of relief. Candelet went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Trailblazers offensively.
Sorochka suffered the loss for Skidmore, falling to 2-2 on the season. She allowed eight runs (two earned) in 5.1 innings, while striking out nine. Offensively for the Thoroughbreds, Sorochka, Hein, Schwartz and Peverada each had two hits and an RBI.
Skidmore returns to action tomorrow at Rochester to open Liberty League play.
