Elena Stansky scored two goals to lead the Skidmore College women's soccer team to a 4-1 win over New Paltz in the Skidmore Invitational Women's Soccer Tournament, Saturday at Wachenheim Field.
The Thoroughbreds improve to 1-1, while the Hawks fall to 0-3.
Skidmore got the scoring started early when
Elena Stansky (Worcester, Mass.) beat New Paltz keeper Stephanie Vega on a crossing pass from
Ali Evans (Avon, Conn.) to give Skidmore a 1-0 lead at the 2:20 mark.
Erin Tornatore tied the game up for the Hawks at the 14:55 mark, when she took a deflected corner kick and scored from the top of the box. The score would remain tied at 1-1 throughout the remainder of the first half.
Stansky broke a 1-1 tie in the 74th minute after she picked up a loose ball, dribbled past the defender and beat the goalie top shelf for her second goal of the game, giving the Thoroughbreds a 2-1 advantage.
Junior
Lauren Madden (Huntington, N.Y.) gave the home team a two goal lead less than 10 minutes later when she took the ball away from the defender and found the back of the net from 18 yards out. Skidmore made it a 4-1 game in the 89
th minute as
Gabi Palacio (Rochester, N.Y.) scored off a rebound of
Sarah LaBella's (Malta, N.Y.) shot.
Freshman
Gab Lawrence (Yorktown, N.Y.) got the start in goal for the Thoroughbreds, allowing one goal and making one save in the first half, but junior
Meghan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) earned the win, stopping both shots she faced in the second half. Vega made eight saves on 12 shots for New Paltz.
Skidmore held a commanding lead in shots, outshooting the Hawks 30-4 and also held a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Thoroughbreds return to action on Saturday, September 11, when they take on host Cortland in day one of the Cortland Red Dragon Invitational.
