Troy, N.Y.--The playoff bound Skidmore College baseball team ended the regular season with a 10-6 win at RPI. The Engineers won the first game 2-0.
Skidmore (27-13, 16-8) will play in next weekend's Liberty League Tournament at Rochester. RPI (24-16, 13-11) needs help to make the tournament.
In the first game, RPI senior Ryan Washburn threw a no-hitter, facing one batter over the minimum as an error kept the righthander from throwing a perfect game. He struck out 11 batters without a walk in 7.0 innings, including a stretch of seven consecutive strikeouts.
Skidmore lefty
Spencer Marcus (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) took the tough-luck loss, surrendering just two runs (1 earned) on four hits in 6.0 innings. He struck out seven batters and did not issue a walk.
Game two saw the Thoroughbreds answer a one-run Engineers bottom of the second with a five-run top of the third. Five straight hits with two outs in the frame led to the five runs as the visitors took advantage of a Rensselaer error earlier in the stanza. Highlighting the inning was an RBI-triple off the bat of
Brian Lowry.
The Thoroughbreds added a run in the top of the fourth and two more in the fifth on a two-run home run by sophomore Zach Rudman (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon).
Skidmore starter
Nick Laracuente (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) earned the win pitching 6.2 innings, while giving up five runs (3 earned) on nine hits. He struck out four, while walking one.
Zack Rudman came on in relief to earn his sixth save.
