Rob Lutin scored four goals and
Flip Bongaerts made 17 saves as the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team advanced to the Liberty League Championship with a 10-6 victory over Union in the Liberty League semifinal at Frank Bailey field on Friday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds improve to 9-5 will face top-seed Rensselaer at noon on Sunday, May 9 in the Liberty League Championship at East Campus Stadium. The Dutchmen finish their season with an 11-4 record.
Union got on the board first on a Scott Garibaldi goal and made it 2-0 less than a minute later when Andrew Higgins converted on a man-up opportunity at the 7:48 mark.
Skidmore would go on to score the next six goals to take a 6-2 lead. Lutin (Port Washington, N.Y.) scored three of the Thoroughbred goals with
Matt Levesque (Wellesley, Mass.) adding two and
Cory Barkoff(Woodbury, N.Y.) tallying a goal and three assists during the run.
The Dutchmen got within three goals on Garibaldi's second goals of the game, but Skidmore added goals from
Jon Hoeg (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) and Barkoff to take an 8-3 lead into the half.
The teams traded goals throughout the third as
Jacques Ward (New York, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the season with a man-down for and Lutin added his fourth of the game for Skidmore, while Jon Stidd tallied his first goal of the season and Ted McKenna scored for Union to make it a 10-5 game after three.
In a defensive fourth quarter which Bongaerts (New Canaan, Conn.) made five of his 17 saves, Ethan Meyer scored the only goal for the Dutchmen as Skidmore earned a 10-6 victory.
Barkoff finished with two goals and three assists and Levesque added two goals for the Thoroughbreds. Garibaldi finished with two goals for Union and McKenna had a goal and an assist.
Sean Aaron finished with 12 stops for Union.
Skidmore won 11-of-19 faceoffs and outshot the Dutchmen 38-37.
