SCHENECTADY, NY – The Skidmore College baseball team swept Union 11-1, 4-3 to secure a return to the Liberty League Championship Tournament.
Skidmore improves to 25-10 overall and 14-6 in Liberty League play while Union falls to 9-27 overall and 2-18 in the league.
In game one,
Anthony Ferri (Jersey City, NJ) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and he circled the bases once.
Leejay Pollacchi (Porter Corners, NY) went 3-for-5 and scored in a run.
Adam Cornachione (Klamath Falls, Ore.) went 2-for-2 with an RBI and reached home twice.
Spencer Marcus (Scarsdale, NY) pitched a complete, allowing only run , five hits, one walk and struck out four to improve his record to 8-1 on the year.
For the Dutchmen, John Johnson (Smithtown, NY), who went 2-for-2 with a home run to left center in the third inning. Andrew Catellier (Voorheesville, NY), who suffered the loss, falls to 1-5 this season.
In the top of the second inning, Ferri led off the inning with a triple to right center field and scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch.
Jake Mendell (St. George, VT) would drive two more runs in later in the inning with a single up the middle. Ferri made a second appearance in at the plate in the second inning and a double to left field drove in two more runs.
In the second game, Ferri, Marcus and
Brian Lowry (West Hartford, Conn.) recorded hits. Lowry,
Rob Rubenstein (Highland Park, NJ) and
Geoff Green (Underhill, VT) each drove in the three runs.
Nick Laracuente (Tenafly, NJ) pitched eight innings with seven strikeouts to earn the win and improve his record to 6-1. Zach Rudman (Pittsford, NY) closed the game to earned his fifth save on the season.
After back-to-back walks by Nick Pisani (Winchester, Mass.) and Rubenstein in the start of the fifth inning, Pisani tied the game 1-1 on Green's ground out to short. While Mendell attempted to steal second after drawing a walk, a throwing error to second allowed Rubenstein to reach home and give Skidmore a 2-1 lead.
It was in the ninth inning when the Thoroughbreds scored the go-ahead run. After Barber reached first base on a walk and replaced by
Matty Tatkow (Sudbury, Mass.), Lowry's double to right field sent Takow home from first.
Skidmore returns home May 4 to face SUNY Oneonta at 4 p.m.
