Game One
In the opener, Seth Roberts allowed two runs on four hits in six innings to earn a 3-2 victory for the Dutchmen.
Union got the scoring started in the top of the third on a suicide squeeze from Tyler Heck, scoring Matt Barretto to take a 1-0 lead. They tacked on two unearned runs in the fourth when Anthony Cassese scored on an error and Marc Douglas doubled home a run to make it a 3-0 game.
Jake Mendell (St. George, Vt.) got Skidmore on the board in the fifth when he drove home
Adam Cornachione (Klamath Falls, Ore.) and
Alex Barber (Cambridge, Mass.) with two outs but was thrown out at second base attempting to advance on the throw and bringing the inning to an end.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Jeremy LeFebvre tossed a perfect seventh to pick up his second save of the season and secure the 3-2 victory.
Roberts improved to 1-4 with the win, while Thoroughbred starter
Trevor Brucato (Stamford, Conn.) falls to 2-3. Brucato tossed a complete game, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out five.
Game Two
In the nightcap,
Derek Stork (Penn Yan, N.Y.) allowed just one hit over nine innings and
Rob Rubenstein (Highland Park, N.J.) drove in three runs as Skidmore earned the split with a 6-0 game two win.
Mendell led off the game with a double and was immediately brought home on Rubenstein's first RBI of the game. Rubenstein would later score on a double play to make it 2-0 after one in favor of the Thoroughbreds.
Skidmore would break it open in the fourth as
Spencer Marcus (Scarsdale, N.Y.) had a bases loaded RBI single and Mendell picked up an RBI with a bases loaded walk. Rubenstein made it 6-0 when he hit a two-RBI double down the fight field line.
Rubenstein finished 2-for-2 with a run scored, two walks, three runs batted in and a stolen base. Mendell also finished with two hits for the Thoroughbreds.
Stork faced just 32 batters, five more than the minimum and struck out seven to improve to 6-2 on the year. Phil Kemp took the loss for Union, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits in four innings of work.
