Saratoga Springs, N.Y.—The Skidmore College starters allowed just one run on five hits to help lead the Thoroughbreds to a 2-0, 2-1 sweep over Clarkson in Saturday's Liberty League baseball doubleheader at Castle Diamond.
Skidmore improved to 13-5 overall and 6-2 in the league, while the Golden Knights fall to 4-11 overall and 3-5 league.
First Game:
In the opener,
Spencer Marcus (Scarsdale, N.Y.) became Skidmore's all-time wins leader with 15 career victories, tossing a two-hit shutout in a 2-0 game one victory for the Thoroughbreds.
After doubling to lead off the third,
Leejay Pollacchi (Porter Corners, N.Y.) scored the game's first run on a balk and later in the inning
Brian Lowry (West Hartford, Conn.) plated
Jake Mendell (St. George, Vt.) on a sacrifice fly to give Skidmore a 2-0 lead.
With a 2-0 lead, Marcus allowed just one base runner between the fourth and sixth innings and faced the minimum of nine batters.
Matt Curry led off the seventh with a double and after intentionally loading the bases with one out; Marcus got Dan Padrazo to ground into a game-ending double play to secure the shutout and the victory for Skidmore.
Marcus improved to 5-0 on the season, allowing just two hits while striking out one and walking three in the complete game shutout for the Thoroughbreds. Bryan Chudy took the tough loss for Clarkson, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit in the complete game effort.
Second Game:
Derek Stork (Penn Yan, N.Y.) tossed a complete game allowing just three hits and
Matt Pisani (Winchester, Mass.) drove in both runs to lift Skidmore to a 2-1 victory and the sweep.
The Golden Knights got on the board first when Brady Torbitt grounded into a fielders choice, scoring Jerry Coleman and giving Clarkson the 1-0 lead.
After Mendell led off the Thoroughbred sixth with a double and advanced to third on a
Zack Rudman (Pittsford, N.Y.) single, Pisani tied it up at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly to center that scored Mendell.
Skidmore took the lead for good in the eighth as Pisani came up big again, singling up the middle to plate
Anthony Ferri (Jersey City, N.J.) and take the 2-1 lead.
With two outs in the ninth, Stork got Steve Magovney to fly out to right, giving the Thoroughbreds the sweep and their second complete game victory of the day.
Stork allowed one run on three hits, striking out two and walking three while going the distance and picking up his second win of the season. Vincent Baldwin suffered the loss in relief of Golden Knights' starter Alex Giovannone.
Mendell, Ferri, Lowry and Marcus all had two hits for Skidmore.
The Thoroughbreds return to action on Saturday, April 10, when they host St. Michael's in a non-league doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
