Thoroughbreds take down #21 Rochester

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. - The Skidmore College baseball team handed 21st-ranked Rochester its first Liberty League loss of the season on Saturday afternoon at Castle Diamond. The Thoroughbreds won the nightcap 7-2 after falling in the opener, 5-2.

Skidmore improved to 20-8 overall and 9-5 in the league, while the Yellowjackets are now 26-5 overall and 17-1 in league play. The Thoroughbred win snaps a 13-game UR win streak and a 21-game Liberty League regular-season win streak.

In the first game, Rochester scored five runs on seven hits. Nate Stein went 2-2 with an RBI sacrifice fly for the Yellowjackets. Mike Francis had a two-run single in the fifth to secure with win. Andy Cannon was 2-2 with a double and two runs. Dan Ludwig improved to 6-1 allowing, one earned run on five hits, with a walk and six strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Nick Cacciola picked-up his fourth save.

For Skidmore, Brian Lowry slammed a solo homer in the first. Anthony Ferri went 2-3. Tervor Brucato (2-2) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits and four walks in five innings.


In the second game, Skidmore took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a solo homer by Ferri. Rochester scored their only runs in the fifth. The Yellowjackets loaded the bases with three straight one-out singles. Rob Barnard the had an RBI single, followed by a sac fly by Jon Menke. Skidmore starter Derek Stork then struck out Casey Storme to end the inning, leaving two stranded.

The Thoroughbreds regained the lead with two in the bottom of the fifth when Alex Barber opened with a double and then scored on a Spencer Marcus single. Marcus was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double. Jake Mendell then singled and scored on a double by Leejay Pollacchi to make it 3-2.

Skidmore added four in the seventh with a two-run single by Adam Cornachione, an RBI single buy Lowry, and a fielders choice RBI by Barber.

Mendell finished 4-4 with two runs. Ferri was 2-5 with two runs, and Barber was 2-4 with a run. Derek Stork pitched six innings to go to 5-2. He allowed two runs on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Jordan Keysor pitched three scoreless innings for his second save.

For Rochester, Stein and Matt Francis were both 2-5. Menke was 2-4 and Rob Barnard was 2-3. Nate Kowal (6-1) took his first loss of the season, allowing three runs on nine hits in six innings.

The teams will play two again on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Castle Diamond.
