Shelton, Conn.--The Skidmore College women's and men's crews opened the spring schedule at the Sacred Heart Invitational on the Housatonic River.

Skidmore was the lone Division III school competing in the event.

The women's varsity eight finished second in 8:13.8, just behind Fordham (8:08.4). Drake was third (8:23.0), Fairfield fourth (8:24.5), and Army fifth (8:27.6). Competing for the Thoroughbreds were coxswain Katie Kenny, Elissa Nadworny, Maddie Demanche, Rachel Hutchins, Libby Gronquist, Dani VanDevoorde, Riley Johnson, Jenny Kauffman, and Korena Burgio.

“We competed well in very tough conditions,” said Skidmore coach Jim Tucci. “There was a raging headwind and difficult chop, but we attacked throughout the entire race.”

The women's second varsity eight finished second behind Fordham and ahead of Fairfield and Iona and the women's novice eight was also second.

On the men's side, the A varsity four was third, behind Army A and Army B. The varsity eight was fifth.

The teams return to the water on April 10 at Ithaca with St. Lawrence.
