Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College baseball team came from behind twice to take two from Vassar College in Liberty League action on Sunday at Castle Diamond. The Thoroughbreds won the first game 6-3 and the second 4-3.
Skidmore is 10-4 overall and 3-1 in Liberty League play. The Brewers are 4-7 and 1-3.
Game 1
The Thoroughbreds grabbed a 1-0 first inning lead when Leejay Pullacchi (Porter Corners, N.Y./Saratoga) singles and later scored on a wild pitch. The Brewers responded with a pair of runs in the second when Liam Lee drove in two runs with a single of Skidmore starter
Spencer Marcus.
Marcus settled down to retire the next 14 Vassar batters, while the Thoroughbreds scored runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 3-2 lead.
Zack Rudman reached on an error in the fourth and later scored on a
Mike Jaffe sac fly to tie the game.
Brian Lowry plated
Anthony Ferri with a two-out double in the fifth for the 3-2 Skidmore lead.
Vassar tied it 3-3 in the sixth when Mike Luongo had a two-out double and then scored on a Joseph Coniglio single.
Skidmore came back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a two-run sac bunt by
Rob Rubenstein.
Marcus improved to 4-0, allowing three runs on seven hits, with one walk and eight strike outs. Ferry finished 3-3.
Daniel Berkowitz (1-1) took the loss for the Brewers. Coniglio and Joe Castilla both went 2-3.
Game 2
Vassar used small ball to take a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, scoring twice on no hits, a walk, sac hit, and hit batter. Skidmore got one back in the sixth when
Zach Brown drilled a two-out RBI triple to score
Zack Rudman. The Brewers made it 3-1 when Ari Glantz had an RBI double in the seventh.
Skidmore tied it in the eighth with
Adam Cornachione's two-run double off tiring Brewer starter John McGregor.
In the ninth, Rudman got hit with a pitch. Pollacchi came in to pitch run and promptly stole second. Marty Tatkow then drove Pollacchi in with a single to left center to give the Thoroughbreds the 4-3 win.
Drew Levinson (2-0) got the win in relief. Skidmore starter
Derek Stork pitched six strong innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Zachary Prudoff (0-2) took the loss in relieve of MacGregor. MacGreor threw more than 110 pitches in 7.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, with four walks and five strikeouts. Michael Perrone was 3-3 and Sal Costanzo was 2-4.
Skidmore hosts Plattsburgh in a single game on March 30.
