Thoroughbreds down Hartwick (in regulation)

Box Score

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.— The Skidmore College men's basketball team took care of business in regulation Tuesday night with an 87-78 win over Hartwick College at the Williamson Sports Center.

It was the first game for the Thoroughbreds since the Nov. 23 seven-overtime marathon win at Southern Vermont.

Skidmore improved to 3-1, while the Hawks fall to 2-3.

The Thoroughbreds used a late 12-0 run to break the game open. Leading 65-64 with 5:37 to play, Skidmore scored 12 straight over the next 2:04 for a 77-64 advantage.

John Mantas got the run started with a three-pointer. Melvis Langyintuo hit a three-pointer and then blocked a shot on the next Hartwick possession, leading to an easy lay-up and ensuing free throw by Jeff Altimar. Altimar ended the run with a three of his own.

Altimar led the Thoroughbreds with 21 points. Langyintuo added 20 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Terron Victoria contributed 11 points and Gerard O'Shea had a game-high eight assists.

“I thought Hartwick had a good game plan coming in and it took us out of rhythm early. I was pleased with how we adjusted in the second half” said Skidmore coach Joe Burke.  “It was good to see Jeff get in going, he is an extremely hard worker and I thought his performance had a positive effect on the rest of the team.”

“I  thought Melvis gave us a tremendous lift off the bench, we rely heavily on his energy and he had a terrific all around game tonight” said Burke.  “Hartwick is very well Coached and they have some terrific young players, this is a very good win for our program but we must get better.”

Jared Suderely led Hartwick with 27 points. Also for the Hawks, Andres Carpio had 19 points and seven assists and Chris Ryder added 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Skidmore had a huge 42-2 advantage in bench scoring and scored 32 second chance points off 31 offensive rebounds. The Thoroughbreds scored 19 points off 10 Hartwick turnovers.

Skidmore will host the Hilton Garden Inn Tournament Saturday and Sunday. The Thoroughbred face Bard College on Saturday at 4 p.m., while Thomas College and Utica College square off in the other semifinal at 6 p.m.
