Tough OT loss for women's lacrosse

TROY, N.Y. – Afton Marshall scored 2:43 into overtime and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team held on for the 12-11 win over Skidmore College. With the win the Red Hawks improve to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League. The Thoroughbreds fall to 5-3 and 1-1 in conference play.
 
Marshall drew a free position opportunity for directly in front of the Thoroughbreds' net and buried a shot to give Rensselaer the 12-11 lead in OT. The Red Hawks were able to hold onto the ball for much of the final 3:17 of overtime to secure the win.
 
Skidmore, which trailed for the first 56:08 of the game, tied it at 10-10 on a tally by sophomore Kimberly Segalas (Stamford, CT/King & Low-Heywood Thomas School). RPI sophomore Stephanie Caouette (Wynantskill, NY/Columbia) gave the hosts the lead back at 11-10 with just 0:52 second to go in regulation.
 
Thoroughbred sophomore Linidsay Stavola (Montauk, NY/East Hampton) evened things at 11-11 with 13 seconds left on a pass from Segalas, sending the game into overtime.
 
The Red Hawks jumped out to an early lead in the first half, scoring the first three goals of the game.
 
Lauren Madden (Huntington, NY/St. Anthony's) and Segalas notched goals to pull within 4-2 with 8:14 left in the first half, but the Red Hawks answered with three straight tallies for their largest lead of the game at 7-2 with under four minutes to go in the first.
 
Skidmore scored two late first half goals and two more to open the second stanza to draw within one at 7-6, less than five minutes into the second. Madden had two of those markers for the visitors, while Stavola and junior Abbie Klaus (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) had the others.
 
The two teams traded goals down the stretch, with RPI leading by only as much as two over the final 25:28.

The Thoroughbreds were led by Madden, who had four goals. Segalas and Stavola each had two goals and an assist. Senior goalie Courtney DeStefano (Rehoboth, MA/Moses Brown School) made 16 stops, including eight in each half.
