Canton, N.Y.--The St. Lawrence University women's lacrossse team posted a 13-10 Liberty League win over Skidmore College to end a five game losing streak at North Country Field.
St. Lawrence improves to a 5-7 overall record and a 2-5 mark in conference play, while Skidmore falls to 6-7 and 2-4 in league action.
Sophomore Kim Morse (Peaks Island, ME/Yarmouth Academy) led the Scarlet and Brown's offense for the second straight game, tallying four goals.
In an evenly played first half that witnessed four ties and just as many lead changes, both teams struggled in transition, with the two squads combining for 29 turnovers in the opening 30 minutes of play. Skidmore got on the scoreboard first, but St. Lawrence responded with two quick goals to earn a 2-1 edge with 22:06 to play. Thoroughbred
Kimberly Segalas, who recorded the visiting team's first goal, also netted the second to tie it at two goals apiece with just a little more than half the period remaining. Forbes took a ball off the stick of Wooters with 15:15 left in the stanza to earn a 3-2 advantage, but Skidmore recorded two straight goals, the second off a fast break after controlling the draw, within 18 seconds of each other to take a 4-3 edge with 10:24 left in the first.
SLU scored three consecutive goals to overcome the deficit and earn a two goal lead, the first of the game, before Skidmore's
Lauren Madden blasted one low past St. Lawrence netminder Anna Marchand (Concord, MA/Middlesex) to cut the lead in half, making it a one goal game with a score of 6-5 in favor of the Saints heading into the break.
St. Lawrence came out with back-to-back goals to open the second half. While Skidmore followed suit with two of its own to climb back within a goal of the home team, St. Lawrence then had a 5-0 run to earn a comfortable 13-7 lead with 16:05 remaining in the contest. Skidmore recorded the final three goals of the game and played a tough defense to close out the contest.
Marchand made six saves for St. Lawrence, while Skidmore's
Courtney DeStefano stopped seven.
St. Lawrence held a 28-21 advantage in shots and controlled 16 draws compared to Skidmore's nine. The Saints also held an advantage on the ground (32-21).
Skidmore was led by Segalas, who recorded four goals, while
Lauren Madden added three for the Thoroughbreds.
