Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – Junior shortstop Anthony Ferri (Jersey City, N.J.) hit two homeruns to lead the Skidmore College baseball team to a 16-10 defeat of Southern Vermont College Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at Castle Diamond.
The Thoroughbreds improve to 14-13 as they move into a weekend showdown will Vassar College. Southern Vermont falls to 8-18.
Skidmore scored in six of eight innings and pounded out 18 hits with five extra base hits.
Ferri put the Thoroughbreds on the board in the second when he hit his first long ball of the day to center to knock in Dave Bershad (Merion, Pa.) to go up 2-1.
Skidmore posted a big six-run inning in the fifth paced by Ferri's three-run bomb to left, an RBI double by Matt Pisani (Winchester, Mass.), and an RBI single from Justin Morelli (East Setauket, N.Y.) to give the Thoroughbreds a 13-5 lead.
Southern Vermont gained some momentum in the seventh when freshman Pat Warrington drove a two-run homer to center and classmate Keith Diotte hit an RBI double to cut the lead to 13-9.
The home squad punched in one run in the seventh and two in the eighth to secure the 16-10 win.
Ferri finished the day going 3-for-3 with six RBI and three runs scored for the Skidmore. Pisani and junior Mike Jaffe (Wynnewood, Pa.) each went 4-for-6, while junior Jeremy Goldman (Moraga, Calif.) picked up one RBI with three two hits and two runs scored.
Southern Vermont was led by Warrington, Diotte, and freshman Eric Wells, who all contributed three hits. Wells added six RBI and two runs scored.
Skidmore sophomore Chris Darin (Cheshire, Conn.) got the win for the Thoroughbreds in his first start of the season. Freshman Ben Naaktgeboren took the loss for the Mountaineers.
Skidmore will host the Brewers at April 18th in a Liberty League doubleheader at noon.
