PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (March 31, 2009)--Mike Jaffe and Justin Morelli paced a Skidmore College 11-hit attack with three apiece as the visiting Thoroughbreds came from behind to defeat Plattsburgh State, 8-2, in non-conference baseball action Tuesday at Chip Cummings Field. Kyle Kowalowski had two hits to lead the Cardinals, who fall to 12-6.
Rob Rubenstein and Anthony Ferri added two hits each for Skidmore, which improves to 8-9 on the year after winning two of three games from the Cardinals in a span of three days. The teams split at doubleheader on Saturday in Saratoga Springs.
Things started well enough for the Cardinals who took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Starting pitcher John Campbell (2-2) was cruising along until he ran into trouble in the sixth when the Thoroughbreds scored three times on four hits and a missed throw to the cut-off man. Morelli's RBI-double gave Skidmore a 3-2 lead that they would never relinquish.
Four Skidmore pitchers combined to hold Plattsburgh to four hits. Starter Derek Stork (2-3) earned the win after going five innings, allowing three hits, two runs and two walks with two strikeouts.
Skidmore scored three more runs in the seventh and one each in the eighth and ninth to ice it.
