Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College baseball team rallied for two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to take a 4-3 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader with Plattsburgh State Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Castle Diamond.
The Cardinals took the first game, 3-2. Skidmore moves to 6-9 on the season while Plattsburgh moves to 12-5
In the first game, Plattsburgh scored three runs on three hits in the fourth inning for the 3-2 win.
Skidmore struck first in the third when Rob Rubenstein (Highland Park, NJ) singled, stole second and then scored on an Anthony Ferri (Jersey City, NJ) double to give the Thoroughbreds a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, Tory Bouyea had an RBI double and Erik Schwind had a two-run single for the Cardinals.
Skidmore got one back in the sixth when Brian Lowry (West Hartford, CT) singled, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Adam Cornachione (Klamath Falls, OR).
Matt O'Leary (4-0) got the win for Plattsburgh, while Billy Davis picked-up his sixth save of the season.
Ed Reilly (Tenafly, NJ) took the loss for the Thoroughbreds, pitching well with three runs on only five hits and three strikeouts.
Ferry, Lowry, and Cornachione were all 2-3 for Skidmore.
Bouyea was 3-3 for the Cardinals.
Down 2-1 in the seventh inning of game two, Skidmore led a charge in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead. Zack Rudman (Pittsford, NY) led off the inning with a walk and was moved to third on a double by Matt Pisani (Winchester, MA). Lowry then drove a pinch-hit single to center to knock in both runners and put the home squad up by one.
The Thoroughbreds notched one more run in the eighth when Ferri scored from third off of a botched throw on a miscued pick-off attempt.
Skidmore freshman pitcher Nick Laracuente (Tenafly, NJ) (2-1) held off the Cardinals in the ninth, getting out of a first-and-third jam with a strikeout to end the game, 4-3.
Laracuente went the distance for the Thoroughbreds in the win, picking up one strikeout and giving up just two earned runs in nine innings.
Ferri finished 3-3 with a double and two runs scored to lead the Thoroughbreds in the nightcap. Pisani had two hits on three at-bats with a double and a run scored.
Skidmore will travel to Hamilton in its next game on March 29 at noon.
