Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – Senior forward Drew Desmaris (St. James, N.Y.) connected on a lay-up with 1.5 seconds left in regulation as the Union College Dutchmen edged Skidmore College, 73-72, in Liberty League play Tuesday night at the Sports and Recreation Center.
It was the conference opener for both squads, as the Dutchmen improve to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the league. The Thoroughbreds fall to 5-7 and 0-1.
The fast-paced contest featured 15 lead changes and six ties.
After trading buckets for most of the second half, Union sophomore Drew Goldstein (Philadelphia, Pa.) tied the game with a lay-up at 1:38 to put the score at 70-70.
Skidmore answered right back when junior
Bobby Langford (Worcester, Mass.) set-up freshman
Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y./Bishop Maggin) for a lay-up to give the Thoroughbreds a two-point lead, 72-70, with 36 seconds left.
A Skidmore foul then left senior Steve Madej (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) on the line for two free-throws with nine seconds to go. Madej missed the first, but connected with the second, cutting the lead to one, 72-71 before a Skidmore turnover gave the ball back to Union with seven seconds left.
Goldstein, rebounded his own missed shot and quickly set-up Desmaris under the net for the lay-up and the 73-72 win.
The Thoroughbreds held a hefty advantage on the glass, posting a 40-31 rebounding advantage in the contest. Union shot a solid 51.8 % (29-56) from the field in the contest and was 9-11 from the free-throw line.
Madej and Desmaris scored 22 points each. Goldstein finished with 11 points and added eight rebounds.
Sophomore
Jeff Altimar (Medfield, Mass.) was 4-9 from three-point range to lead the Thoroughbreds with 18 points. Junior
Jon Douglas (Shutesbury, Mass.) chipped in 10 points, while Langford tallied eight points and 11 rebounds.
Skidmore will host St. Lawrence at 8 p.m. on Friday.
