Field hockey falls in penalty strokes

Canton, N.Y.--Senior goaltender Emilie Lannamann made 19 saves through double overtime and then stopped four of five Skidmore College penalty strokes in a shootout to help St. Lawrence University to a 4-3 Liberty League victory over the 16th-ranked Thoroughbreds on Saturday.
St. Lawrence, now 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League had to come from behind as Skidmore, 5-3, 2-1,  scored in the opening minute of each half and had a 3-1 lead, but the Saints tied it with just under 15 minutes to go in regulation and had a ton of opportunities to win it in two 15-minute overtimes.
The Saints had nine penalty corners in the two overtime periods, but couldn't take the lead. Lannamann had 12 of her 19 saves in the overtimes, but the biggest ones didn't figure in the statistics as goals and saves in a shootout do not count in the official game statistics.
Saint captain Jen Stetson opened the shootout with a successful penalty stroke, beating Skidmore goalie Liz Catinella to the upper corner. Lanamann then stopped Christine Kemp with a pad save and Saint rookie Erika Swits scored the eventual shootout winning goal with a shot to the lower corner. Lannamann saved shots by Annie Rosencrans and Casey Tang in succession and the Saints held a 2-0 lead with two shooters to go. While Catinella saved shots by Rachel Burke, Brooke Maloney and Kristi Onzik in succession and Katie Potter was successful on her try for the Thoroughbreds, Lannamann stopped Elise Britt with a pad save to clinch the shootout win.
Skidmore wasted little time in breaking the scoring ice as the Thoroughbreds rushed the Saint goal with the first possession of the game and Annie Rosencrans controlled a bouncing pass from Christine Kemp as she cut through the Saint defense. Potter put the ball inside the far post with the game just 22 seconds old for a 1-0 lead.
The Saints, who had their chances in the Skidmore circle, finally pulled even with 8:07 to play in the first half when Brooke Maloney scored on a second rebound off a shot.
Skidmore regained the lead exactly two minutes later when Kemp chipped the ball away from a Saint defender at the side of the goal and sent it out in front to Annie Rosecrans, who flipped it over a sprawled Lannamann.
The Thoroughbreds struck again just into the second half as Kemp deflected a pass into the circle up and over Lannamann for her fourth goal of the season and the 3-1 lead, but the Saints battled their way back.
Michelle Verrochi deflected a cross from Smith to beat Catinella with 8:15 gone in the second half and Smith converted from point blank range off a feed by Maloney at the 60:38 mark to tie the game at 3-3.
Skidmore finished the game with a 44-38 edge in overall shots while the Saints had a 17-12 advantage in penalty corners, nine of those coming in the two overtime periods. Catinella finished with 10 saves for Skidmore.
