Skidmore splits with RPI, but falls short in playoff bid

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College baseball team finished its season with an 8-5, 4-6 split with 19th ranked Rensselaer, Sunday at Castle Diamond.

The split left the Thoroughbreds (20-17, 12-12 Liberty) in a tie for fourth in the final Liberty League standings with Clarkson, but the Golden Knights win the tiebreaker with a pair of wins against league winner Rochester.   RPI (30-10, 18-6) enters next weekend's tournament as the number two seed.

Skidmore won the first game by roughing up Rensselaer ace Ken Carroll (Shelton, Conn.).  The Thoroughbreds handed Carroll (5-1) his first loss, scoring six runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks in 2 and 1/3.  Skidmore pitcher Spencer Marcus (Scarsdale, N.Y.) earned the complete game win, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits, no walks and six strikeouts.

Matt Pisani (Winchester, Mass.) was 2-4 for the Thoroughbreds with a pair of RBI singles.  Anthony Ferri (Jersey City, N.J.) was 2-4 with a double.   Right fielder Greg Carlow (Mystic, Conn.) and Justin Morelli (East Setauket, N.Y.) had two hits each.  Carlow collided with the outfield fence in the third to rob Sean Wilkes (Troy, N.Y.) of an extra base hit.  Leftfielder Rob Rubenstein also had a diving catch to stop a Red Hawk rally in the seventh.

For RPI, Pat Reardon (Troy, N.Y.) was 2-3 with a pair of doubles. Catcher Steven Slusher (Pedricktown, N.J.) was 2-3 with a run.

In the second game, Skidmore took a 4-3 lead into the ninth, but Dan Feenan (Clifton Park, N.Y.) drilled an 0-2 pitch off the scoreboard for a three-run homer to give the Red Hawks the 6-4 lead.

Feenan went 3-4 with four RBI. He had three of Rensselaer's eight hits.  Dan Valentine (Goshen, Conn.) was 1-3 with an RBI double in the second.  Andrew Novick (Hopewell Junction) improved to 3-2 with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Ferri was 2-5 for the Thoroughbreds with an RBI double. Jake Mendell was 1-2 with an RBI a double.  Carlow had another outstanding defensive play, throwing out Wilkes at the plate as he tried to score on a fly to deep right in the eighth.  Ed Reilly ( Tenafly, N.J.) took the loss in relief.  Sam Pope (Holden, Mass.) started and allowed two runs on three hits in five innings.
