Skidmore repeats Liberty split with Clarkson

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – It wasn't pretty, but the Skidmore College baseball team pulled off its second straight Liberty League split with Clarkson University, Saturday at Castle Diamond. The Thoroughbreds lost the first game 7-4 and won the second 10-8.

Skidmore is now 19-13 overall and 11-9 in Liberty play, while Clarkson is 15-16 and 7-9.

In the first game, Clarkson broke open a tight game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to grab a 7-2 lead.  The Thoroughbreds scratched out single runs in the sixth and seventh, but were not able to get any closer than the 7-4 final.

For the Golden Knights, Sean Griffin was 3-3  with an RBI and Brady Torbitt was 2-3 with a solo home run. Brett Peplowski was 1-3 with a two-run double in the fifth.  Austin Pitkin earned the win, allowing three runs, two earned on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts in six innings.

For Skidmore, Anthony Ferri was 3-4 with a double and one RBI, Rob Rubenstein went 3-3 with a pair of doubles, and Jake Mendell was 2-2 with an RBI.

In game two, the teams were tied 2-2 when the Thoroughbreds erupted for five in the eighth and three in the ninth to grab a 10-2 lead.  Clarkson made a game of it with six runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Skidmore held on for the 10-8 win.

Matt Pisani went 3-5 with four RBI, including a solo home run in the second and a two-run single in the eighth.  Ferri was 2-4 with a double and two RBI and Rubenstein was 2-4 with two runs. Adam Brown and Logan Arena also had two hits for the Thoroughbreds.  Tom Gruber got the win with 3 1/3 inning of scoreless relief.  Nick Laracuente, who had a complete game win on Friday, got the final out to pick-up his first save of the season.

Clarkson's Matt Holiday had a three-run homer in the six-run ninth.  Starter David Goerold pitched five solid innings, allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Skidmore will host Hamilton at East Side Rec in a non-league game on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
