SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Union scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to battle back from a three-run deficit for a 7-6 Liberty League win over the Skidmore College baseball team on Friday afternoon at Ferrari Field.
- Union (15-16, 6-8 Liberty League, 5-5 LL East) got a two-run home run from Evan Lagemann, the second batter of the inning, to pull to within a run at 6-5. Then, a single, pitching change, sacrifice bunt, and fielder's choice put runners on the corners with two outs for Union. A pop up just beyond the infield was dropped to score both runs and give the visitors their first lead since the second inning.
- Skidmore had a runner at second with one out in both the eighth and ninth, but was unable to get the clutch hit to tie it up.
- Quinn Hocom struck out 10 for Skidmore over seven strong innings in the no decision. He allowed three runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. It was his fifth double-digit strikeout game for the senior right hander.
- Nate Vandersea was 3-for-3 at the plate for Skidmore with two runs scored. He was also hit by a pitch in the eighth.
- The 4-through-7 hitters in the Skidmore lineup went a combined 1-for-14 with four strikeouts and seven runners left on base.
- Nico Lambros was 3-for-3 for the Garnet Chargers with a stolen base. Seven different players scored runs for Union.
- Lambros gave Union a 1-0 lead in the second on a single to right.
- In the bottom half, a leadoff error led to an unearned run on a Holden Caney soft grounder back to the pitcher.
- Skidmore took the lead in the third. Vandersea singled off the pitcher to lead it off before Quinn McDonald crushed a one-bounce double to right to score the run easily from first.
- Skidmore added two more in the fourth. EJ Stefanelli got plunked to lead off and went to second on a Caney bunt. Landon Schwartzman then hit a double to the gap in right-center to score Skidmore's third run, and came across with some help from an errant throw before a productive McDonald out to make it 4-2.
- Skidmore met the new Union pitcher in the bottom of the seventh with some immediate traffic as Vandersea singled down the right field line, McDonald got hit on a full-count offering, and everyone was safe on a bunt when the third baseman was ruled to have not kept his foot on the bag on the throw in the turf.
- Right after that, Eddie Galvao beat the drawn-in infield to bring in a pair of runs and make it 6-3. Skidmore left the bases loaded.
- Union out-hit Skidmore, 12-8. All nine batters in the Garnet Charger order recorded at least one knock.
