Thoroughbreds beat Ithaca, 10-7, to begin weekend series

ITHACA, N.Y. – Quinn McDonald and Jack Riva both homered and doubled, and Eddie Galvao finished a home run short of the cycle as the Skidmore College baseball team defeated Ithaca College at Cornell on Friday afternoon, 10-7.
  • Skidmore improves to 15-7 overall with its fifth consecutive victory and is 3-4 overall in the Liberty League thanks to the non-division win over the Bombers.
  • Ithaca is 12-10 and dips to 4-6 in the league.
  • The Thoroughbreds ran out to a 5-0 lead with two in the first and three in the second, and led by as many as six with an extra run in the fourth.
  • The Bombers his two-run homers in both the fifth and sixth innings to make it a two-run game, but the Thoroughbreds plated three more in the top of the seventh, which proved to be enough to take down Ithaca for the second time since April of 1996.
  • Senior Sam Dalsimer nailed down his third save of the year by recording the final four outs.
  • Quinn Hocom struck out six over six innings. He breezed through the first four innings with little resistant before back-to-back innings surrendering two-run shots. Hocom, who last time out reached the 200-career strikeout plateau, is now 5-0.
  • Galvao, the second batter of the game, singled in McDonald for the game's first run early. Then, Rive came through with a two-out, RBI double to make it 2-0.
  • In the second, Galvao drove in Holden Caney, who walked, with a two-out triple to right and scored a batter later when Jack Collins singled the opposite way. Then, after an EJ Stefanelli infield single, Collins stole third and then scored on a Mac Cady single to make it 5-0.
  • Another leadoff walk and then a two-out error in the fourth made it 5-0 Skidmore.
  • Anthony Mestre and Matt Curtis were the home-run hitters for the Bombers to briefly pull to within a pair.
  • Then, in the seventh, Riva led off the inning with a solo homer to left, and McDonald later smashed a two-run dinger to right to stretch the lead back up to five.
  • Tow singles and then back-to-back walks to Landon Schwartzman and Caney got Skidmore in double digits in the eighth.
  • Ithaca completed the scoring with a two-RBI Lucas Orlovitz single off Dalsimer with two outs in the eighth.
  • Dalsimer then worked around two errors that allowed the tying run to step up to the plate in the ninth to close it out.
