SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team fell 11-6 to No. 23 St. John Fisher at Wachenheim Field on Friday afternoon.
In a defensive-sided matchup that featured 44 combined turnovers, the Thoroughbreds (4-6) battled throughout with timely goals in a low-scoring first three-quarters, but were unable to keep pace down the stretch as the Cardinals (4-3) pulled away in the fourth to secure the victory. Sophomore
Tatum Walsh totaled a dozen saves in goal to anchor a terrific defensive effort that included forcing 21 St. John Fisher turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a low-scoring first half of play, St. John Fisher scored first with 10:11 in the opening quarter before sophomore Olivia Emerson scored off the dish from fellow sophomore Hillary Noble to tie the game at 1-1 with 2:39 on the clock.
- The Cardinals responded 26 seconds later to take a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.
- In the second period, neither team found the back of the net until the final minute, when senior Julia Cafasso converted on a free position shot to tie the game with 44 seconds left.
- However, the tie was again short lived as St. John Fisher closed out the half by retaking the lead with just seven ticks on the clock to lead 3-2 at intermission.
- In the third quarter, the Cardinals struck in quick succession with two goals in a minute span to quickly push the deficit up to 5-2 with 11:28 to go.
- Skidmore answered back with a goal from freshman Ella Koosis, off the assist from senior Brooke LaVallee, to trim the deficit down to 5-3 with 8:54 remaining in the third.
- The Cardinals again closed out the quarter with the final score, this time on a solo goal with 3:11 left to take a 6-3 lead into the fourth.
- In the fourth, senior Lily Hudner converted on a free position shot to cut it down to a two-goal game. However, St. John Fisher responded with four-unanswered goals to push the deficit up to 10-4 with 6:05 to go.
- The Thoroughbreds managed to cut it down to a four-goal difference with scores from Hudner and freshman Lauren Hughey to make it 10-6 with 3:53 to go, but it proved too little too late as the Cardinals held on for the win.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- Hudner led the offense with two goals and one assist, as well as one groundball and one caused turnover.
- LaVallee filled the stat sheet with four groundballs, three caused turnovers, three draw controls to go with one assist.
- Emerson tallied one goal, two groundballs and three caused turnovers.
- Cafasso had one goal, two groundballs, two caused turnovers and one draw control.

The Thoroughbreds are back at it tomorrow by hosting Bard at 3 PM, capping off a lacrosse doubleheader at Wachenheim Field. The game will also serve as Senior Day, with celebrations taking place postgame.
