Fourth quarter comeback falls short as Thoroughbreds lose to Union, 10-9

SCHENECTADY, NY – The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team mounted a valiant fourth-quarter comeback, but fell just short in a 10-9 road loss to Union on Saturday afternoon.

Despite being doubled-up on the score board through the first three quarters, the Thoroughbreds (4-5, 0-3 Liberty League) never relented, closing the game with a 4-0 shutout run in the final period to nearly complete the comeback against the Garnet Chargers (2-3, 1-0 Liberty League).

In the fourth quarter, Skidmore outshot Union 7-4 and capitalized on both free-position opportunities while defensively forcing six turnovers. The Thoroughbreds also held Union to just 3-of-5 on clear attempts during the final stretch.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Skidmore struck first on a solo goal from senior Julia Cafasso with 12:01 to go in the first, before the Garnet Chargers answered with three-straight goals to take a 3-1 lead with 4:50 on the clock.
  • Cafasso closed out the quarter with a solo player-up score to slash the Skidmore deficit in half, before also assisting fellow senior Lily Hudner at the start of the second period to tie the game at 3-3 with 13:59 to go.
  • Union took control of the quarter from there with three-straight goals to lead 6-3 with 1:43 remaining in the half.
  • Sophomore Olivia Emerson closed out the half by scoring with just 48 seconds remaining off the assist from Cafasso to pull the Thoroughbreds to within 6-4 at intermission.
  • Coming out of halftime, it was all Garnet Chargers in the third quarter as Union outscored Skidmore, 4-1, to take a commanding 10-5 lead into the final period. Sophomore Hillary Noble scored the Thoroughbreds' lone goal of the period off the dish from junior Phoebe Ross.
  • In the fourth quarter, Skidmore found the back of the net four times while also shutting out Union on the defensive end.
  • Hudner began the comeback with a player-up goal off the assist from freshman Lauren Hughey at the 10:08 mark, before junior Charlotte Taylor and Hudner both successfully converted on free position shots to make it just a two-goal game with 3:04 to go.
  • With under a minute to go, the Thoroughbreds forced a timely Union turnover that resulted in an Emerson solo score with just 18 seconds to go, but pulling Skidmore to within just one score.
  • However, Union would win the ensuing draw control and successfully run out the clock in the closing seconds.
