Thoroughbreds defeat UMass Boston, 13-6

BOSTON, MA – Led by a hat trick from senior David Koffler, the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team continued a perfect start to the season by defeating UMass Boston, 13-6, on the road Thursday afternoon.

After a low-scoring first quarter, the Thoroughbreds (5-0) seized control in the middle periods, outscoring the Beacons (2-2) by a 7-2 margin in the second quarter and 4-1 in the third.

Skidmore dominated statistically across the board, outshooting UMass Boston 49-21 while forcing 29 turnovers, limiting clears to 20-of-29, holding a 52-22 ground ball advantage, and winning faceoffs 18-5.

In goal, sophomore Marc Gadbois compiled eight saves for his seventh career win. On faceoffs, senior Jason Fastiggi finished 10-of-14, while freshman Wilder Finkel went 6-of-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a low-scoring first period that saw Koffler open the scoring for Skidmore in a 1-1 tie, the Thoroughbreds erupted for six unanswered goals to begin the second quarter, building a commanding 7-1 lead with 1:28 remaining in the half.
  • Freshman Conor Geier sparked the run in the opening minute of the second period, followed by goals from sophomore Michael Aiello, freshman Leo Passalaqua, sophomore Jake Weiner, Koffler and senior Caleb Lawson.
  • The Beacons responded with two goals in under a minute to cut the deficit to 7-3 with 42 seconds remaining, but Geier answered with a solo score to close the half and send Skidmore into intermission with an 8-3 lead.
  • Coming out of the break, Skidmore kept the pressure on with four straight goals from Lawson, junior Cooper Haas, Aiello and Koffler to break the game open and extend the lead to 12-3 with 7:23 remaining in the third.
  • In the fourth quarter, sophomore Miles Kim added the final goal of the game with 8:06 remaining to cap the road win.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Koffler totaled three goals with one assist, three groundballs and two caused turnovers.
  • Aiello finished with two goals, one assist and one caused turnover.
  • Weiner tallied one goal, two assists, six groundballs and one caused turnover.
  • Lawson and Geier each scored twice.
  • Freshman Joseph Killcommons dished out a pair of assists to go with three groundballs.

The Thoroughbreds will host University of Hartford on Saturday for a 1 PM matchup at Wachenheim Field.
