Thoroughbreds take down New Paltz, 13-7, to improve to 3-0

NEW PALTZ, NY – Behind a balanced offensive effort, the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team secured a 13-7 road victory over New Paltz on Saturday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds (3-0) had seven different goal scores – highlighted by hat tricks from senior Julia Cafasso and junior Charlotte Taylor – and outshot the Hawks (1-1) by a substantial 29-15 margin, while also forcing 23 turnovers and finishing with a 14-8 edge in draw controls. In goal, sophomore Tatum Walsh recorded five saves to earn her third career victory. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After New Paltz struck first in the opening minutes, the Thoroughbreds responded with five consecutive goals that stretched midway into the second quarters. Senior Lily Hudner, freshman Piper Morgan and senior Allison Brewer each scored in the opening frame to give Skidmore a 3-1 lead after one
  • In the second quarter, Taylor and Cafasso added on with a pair of scores to extend the advantage to 5-1 at the 8:22 mark.
  • The Hawks trimmed the deficit with a goal at 4:58 in the first half, but Skidmore still carried a 5-2 lead into intermission.
  • The Thoroughbreds opened the third quarter strong, scoring four unanswered goals off the sticks of Morgan, freshman Lauren Hughey, Brewer and Cafasso to build a commanding 9-2 advantage with 10:23 remaining.
  • However, New Paltz answered with four straight goals of its own to cut the lead to 9-6 with 4:08 left in the quarter.
  • After Taylor closed the third with a goal to regain momentum, Skidmore pulled away in the fourth by outscoring the Hawks 3-1 in the frame behind goals from Cafasso, junior Phoebe Ross and Taylor to secure the 13-7 victory.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Cafasso notched a hat trick with three goals to go alongside two groundballs and a caused turnover.
  • Taylor scored three goals with two draw controls.
  • Morgan found the back of the net twice.
  • Brewer scored a pair of goals to go with one caused turnover.
  • Ross dished out two assists to go with one goal.
  • Senior Brooke LaVallee led the team with four groundballs, four draw controls and three caused turnovers.
