SPRINGFIELD, MA – Senior
Grace deBenedictis delivered the game-winning goal 1:15 into overtime as the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team secured a thrilling 11-10 road victory over Springfield on Thursday evening.
Freshman
Piper Morgan forced the extra period with a late equalizer, and the Thoroughbreds (2-0) withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally from the Pride (0-1), which included three goals in a 90-second span late in the period.
In a tightly contested matchup, Skidmore overcame Springfield's advantages in shots (31-29), turnovers forced (17-14), and draw controls (15-8), as sophomore
Tatum Walsh served as the difference-maker, anchoring the defense with 12 saves to earn her second career victory in goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a low-scoring first half, the Thoroughbreds struck twice in the opening quarter off the stick of senior Julia Cafasso before the senior assisted on a goal by junior Phoebe Ross in the second, as Skidmore entered halftime trailing 4-3 to the Pride.
- The offense came alive in a high-scoring third quarter, as senior Allison Brewer opened the frame on a feed from Ross to tie the game at 4-4 with 10:25 remaining.
- After Springfield regained the lead with a player-up goal, junior Charlotte Taylor answered with an unassisted score to even the contest at 5-5 at the 8:31 mark.
- Springfield then scored back-to-back goals to take a 7-5 advantage, but the Thoroughbreds closed the quarter with three unanswered tallies from Cafasso, Ross, and Morgan — all within the final 2:03 — to carry an 8-7 lead into the fourth.
- In the final frame, Brewer extended the lead to two with 8:14 to play, before Springfield responded with three straight goals in a 90-second span to move ahead 10-9 with 2:23 remaining.
- Needing a late equalizer, Morgan delivered with 49 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, setting up deBenedictis to ultimately seal the victory for the Thoroughbreds after finding the back of the net 1:15 into the extra period.
