Thoroughbreds tripped up by Spartans

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Skidmore College field hockey team dropped a 4-3 non-league game on the road at Vermont State University Castleton on Friday evening.
  • Skidmore drops to 4-3 on the year, while Castleton is now 3-4 and winners of three in a row.
  • Ella Costa, Molly Van Vranken, and Gianna DiGioacchino scored the goals for Skidmore. For Van Vranken, a first year, it was the first of her young career. Brooke Golden and Mia Angwin had assists.
  • Ava Laross found the back of the cage twice for the victorious Spartans. Peyton Richardson and Brooke Noble had the other goals for the hosts.
  • Costa notched her fourth goal of the season at the 3:01 mark on a Skidmore corner to put the Thoroughbreds ahead. Golden picked up the assist.
  • Castleton tied it with 3:11 remaining in the first quarter, but Van Vranken scored 45 seconds later, unassisted, to give Skidmore a 1-0 lead after 15 minutes of play.
  • The Spartans dominated the first eight minutes of period two resulting in three more goals and a 4-2 lead.
  • Skidmore players accounted for each of the final 10 shots of the game, but DiGioacchino scored the only goal to within the stretch to pull the Thoroughbreds to within a tally in the middle of the fourth quarter.
  • Skidmore managed one penalty corner and one shot, which was blocked, the rest of the way.
  • Skidmore out-shot the hosts 17-14 overall and had 11 shots on goal to Castleton's seven.
  • Skidmore also finished with a 9-6 edge in penalty corners.
  • Nicole Sylvestri made three saves for Skidmore in just under 53 minutes in the cage.
  • Zoe Martin turned away eight shots for Castleton.
  • Abby Ezickson led Skidmore with four shots, each of which were on target.
UP NEXT
Skidmore will host top-ranked Middlebury on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m. before beginning Liberty League play next weekend.
