Union takes two from Skidmore in Liberty League East twin bill

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — The Skidmore College baseball team dropped both ends of a Liberty League East Division doubleheader to Union College on Saturday afternoon at Castle Diamond, falling 8-6 in the opener and 12-1 in game two.
  • Skidmore has completed Liberty League play and will await its opponent for a Liberty League Crossover Series May 2-3. The Thoroughbreds have clinched home field for that series.

  • The game was delayed two hours and 28 minutes due to heavy rain that came in minutes before the 11 a.m. pushed up start.
  • Skidmore dropped the opener of the doubleheader against Union, 8-6, after the Garnet Chargers scored eight unanswered runs in the final two innings.
  • The Thoroughbreds held a 2-0 lead through seven innings behind a strong start from junior Quinn Hocom.
  • Hocom pitched six shutout frames, allowing just two hits. He struck out four and walked three. It was his second start of five or more scoreless innings on the season.
  • Union struck for four runs in the eighth and added four more in the ninth to take control.
  • Skidmore mounted a rally in the bottom of the ninth, plating four runs, but the comeback fell short with the tying run stranded at the plate.
  • Senior Andy Pelc hit a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to pull Skidmore within two. He finished 2-for-3 with a double, and a stolen base.
  • Senior Trey Bourque went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
  • Sophomore Quinn McDonald reached base three times, finishing 1-for-3 with a double, two walks, and a run scored.
  • Alex Oppenheimer picked up the win in relief for Union, recording the final out of the seventh inning.
  • Alex Erickson earned his second save, despite allowing four runs on three hits over the final two innings.
  • Caleb Miller led Union with a solo home run and two runs scored.
  • Dylan Swarts added an RBI double and scored twice for the Garnet Chargers.
Union 12, Skidmore 1 (7 inn.)
  • Skidmore dropped the second game of its Liberty League East doubleheader to Union, 12-1, as the Garnet Chargers scored in six of seven innings to complete the sweep.
  • The Thoroughbreds (17-12-2, 9-3 LL East) were held to four hits in the seven-inning contest.
  • Union (19-13, 6-3 LL East) scored multiple runs in five frames, including four runs in the seventh to cap the win.
  • Swarts led Union on both sides of the ball, going 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and earning the win with four shutout innings on the mound.
  • Jack Klein earned the save, tossing three innings and allowing one run on one hit with four strikeouts.
  • Senior Zachary Leiderman had two of Skidmore's four hits, including a double.
  • Sophomore Owen Roy drove in the Thoroughbreds' lone run with an RBI groundout in the sixth.
