Thoroughbreds stumble at St. Lawrence

CANTON, NY – Mounting turnovers proved too costly to overcome as the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team fell to St. Lawrence, 10-5, on the road Friday afternoon.

Despite staying competitive for much of the first half, the Thoroughbreds (6-8, 3-5 Liberty League) never established a rhythm offensively after coughing up the ball a staggering 26 times throughout the game, allowing the Saints (6-7, 4-3 Liberty League) to dominate possession and put up 13 more shots as a team.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Saints struck first in the early seconds of the first quarter, Skidmore responded with a solo goal from junior Julia Cafasso to even things up at 1-1 with 12:58 on the clock.
  • St. Lawrence followed up with consecutive goals to take a two-score lead with 5:40 remaining.
  • Senior Lily Schwartzman closed out the quarter strong for the Thoroughbreds with a much-needed goal with 1:26 to go, off the assist from Cafasso, to pull Skidmore within one score.
  • In the second quarter, Schwartzman scored her second goal of the game off the feed from sophomore Phoebe Ross, but it was not enough as the Saints struck three times in the frame to double up the Thoroughbreds, 6-3, entering halftime.
  • St. Lawrence pulled away in the second half by scoring the first four goals to take a commanding 10-3 lead with 9:36 to go in the fourth quarter.
  • Skidmore scored twice in the fourth quarter off the sticks of sophomore Charlotte Taylor and junior Allison Brewer.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS

  • Cafasso finished with a goal, an assist and a groundball.
  • Taylor finished with a goal, a groundball and one draw control.
