Skidmore picks up first league win in split with Union

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team earned its first Liberty League victory of the season on Monday with an 11-2 win in five innings over Union College. The Garnet Chargers held on for a 3-2 win in game two as the doubleheader ended in a sweep.

Skidmore 11, Union 2 (5 inn.)
  • The Thoroughbreds scored in all four innings including four in the second and five in the fourth.
  • The top three hitters in the Skidmore order went a combined 6-for-8 with six RBI and five runs.
  • Jessica Nachamie led them all with four runs driven in with a double and stolen base.
  • Caitlyn Dion went 3-for-3 with two RBI.
  • Sam Waters and Elle Harrison both finished 2-for-3 with two stolen bases. Waters also had a walk.
  • Mallory Allen won her fourth game in the circle for the Thoroughbreds. She scattered eight hits but only allowed two runs thanks in part to not issuing a free pass. She struck out two.
  • Nachamie drove in one with a double in the first before Waters' two-run double highlighted Skidmore's four-run second.
  • Union got one back in the third before Dion singled in a run in the third to make it 6-1.
  • Union again inched forward with a single run in the fifth before Skidmore went past the run-rule requirement with five in the fourth highlighted by two-run singles from both Nachamie and pinch hitter Delaney Swain.
  • Kyle Spring was 2-for-3 for the Garnet Chargers with a double for the team's only extra-base hit.

Union 3, Skidmore 2
  • Nachamie had two out of the three Skidmore hits including another double as well as an RBI single in the sixth to pull Skidmore to within one.
  • Union got the first two runs of the game on an Ellie Wintringer solo home run in the second before an unearned tally in the second doubled the lead.
  • Nachamie doubled to lead off the fourth for Skidmore and came around to score with a wild pitch and Madison Bonham sacrifice fly.
  • Union gained its two-run lead back in the fifth when Wintringer singled around a run for her second RBI of the contest.
  • In Skidmore's half of the sixth, Waters got plunked and stole second before Nachamie came through with a two-out hit to pull Skidmore back to within one.
  • Union (5-13, 2-4 Liberty League) got out of the inning with the lead intact thanks to a double play.
  • Carra Cleaves retired the Thoroughbreds in order in the seventh to complete the win. She surrendered just three hits and two runs for the complete-game victory with one walk and seven strikeouts.
  • Skidmore (7-17, 1-5 Liberty League) starter Shayne Cleeve turned in the strongest start of her young career. The first-year allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits with just one walk.
